Diabetes Self-Management Workshops

The Diabetes Self-Management Program (DSMP) workshop is designed for caregivers, pre-diabetics, and people with type 2 diabetes. This workshop teaches the skills needed in the day-to-day management of any type of ongoing health condition in order to maintain and/or increase an active and fulfilling lifestyle.
DSMP Workshop topics include:
•Techniques to deal with the symptoms of diabetes, fatigue, pain, hyper/hypoglycemia, stress, and emotional problems such as depression, anger, fear and frustration
•Appropriate exercise for maintaining and improving strength and endurance
•Appropriate use of medication
•Working more effectively with health care providers
After taking this workshop participants have reported:
•Improvements in hypoglycemic symptoms
•Better communication with healthcare provider
•Healthier eating habits and reading food labels
These workshops meet once a week for 7 consecutive weeks, for two and a half hours. Workshops are facilitated from a highly detailed manual by two trained leaders, one or both of whom are peer leaders with diabetes themselves. Each workshop is interactive. Participants will have the opportunity to make weekly action plans, share experiences, and help each other solve problems they encounter by creating and carrying out their own self-management.
Who should participate in DSMP?
Anyone living with type 2 diabetes, caregivers, and pre-diabetics. Caregivers and partners are also welcome to attend.
Tuesdays, Oct. 1 to Nov. 12, 2019, 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Wellness and Weight Management Center in the Center for Molecular Medicine Building at University of Nevada, Reno.
